Sports teams that draw mascot names from cultural concepts, historical events, and wildlife receive unnecessary criticism. Mascots were chosen by American’s ancestors and had no intention of having negative connotations. Native American mascots were chosen to honor tribes. While mascots can be seen as controversial, these mascots are irrelevantly argued and should not be seen as symbols of oppression because they do not contain negative connotations or encourage bullying, and, as a result, are still respected in societies and do not impact historical context.
